Watch for unintended consequences in engagement design

Poorly designed engagement can create new challenges.

Engagement is vital for strengthening resilience, but design matters. Tokenistic processes breed cynicism. Over-promising creates disappointment. Asking the same people repeatedly burns goodwill. These side-effects can erode trust and leave communities less willing to act next time. Good engagement recognises risks as well as benefits. It learns from experience and feedback and breaks the cycles of poor past engagement . Resilience grows when engagement strengthens relationships rather than straining them.
