Patterns and cycles help communities see systems clearly

Recognising cycles reveals risks and opportunities for resilience.

Systems sometimes move in cycles — growth, conservation, release, renewal – following a recognised pattern know as the Adaptive Cycle. Patterns like drought–flood, boom–bust, or rise–decline repeat over time. Communities that notice these rhythms can prepare, adapt, and act with more foresight. Pattern ‘literacy’ make invisible dynamics visible. They show where resilience is weak, and where opportunities for renewal lie. Ignoring patterns leaves communities surprised by predictable events. Resilience grows when patterns and cycles are used inform thinking and planning.
