Hidden feedbacks create opportunities for resilience

Feedback loops can amplify risks or spark adaptation.

Systems are full of feedbacks — some visible, others hidden. Rising energy bill might push people to conserve power, while social media can magnify fear or spread calm. These ‘loops’ folding back on themselves shape resilience in unexpected ways. Communities that pay attention to feedbacks can harness them for good. Learning about loops and leverage points can help focus effort. By reinforcing positive loops — like peer-to-peer learning — and interrupting harmful ones like toxic local social media, resilience becomes stronger. Resilience grows when feedbacks are seen as levers for adaptation.
